Ten feet from the cart
You are the station attendant on duty in a busy train concourse.
Camila has set up a folding table of home baking, without a permit, to raise money for a neighbor's family who lost their home in a fire last week. Lusia, who pays the station a monthly fee for her licensed coffee cart nearby, has called you over. The evening rush starts in half an hour.
The scene
Lusia: I pay six hundred a month for this spot. You're ten feet from my cart.
Camila: It's one evening, for a family with nothing left. Permits take weeks.
Lusia: I'm sorry for them. But if someone gets sick, or the next table shows up?
Camila: Then decide, please. Do I pack up before the rush?
The two questions
- 1What would you decide, and how would you explain it to Camila and Lusia?
- 2When a rule exists for good reasons, what would justify making an exception to it?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
