Tears outside the corner store

You are a neighbor who walks your dog past the corner store each afternoon.

On your afternoon dog walks past the corner store near the middle school, you've noticed your neighbor's older son, about sixteen, making fun of younger kids as they head home. Today you arrived to see one boy walk off in tears, but you only caught the teen's final comment, not what led up to it. You barely know his father, Jalal, beyond waving across the street. You could speak to the teen yourself, mention it to Jalal, or tell the school, and any of these could overstep or make things harder for the younger kids.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether to get involved in a situation when you only knew part of the story. What did you do, and what did you learn?

What raters look for

Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
