The only map

You are hiking with a close friend and carry the only map.

You and your friend Emil are an hour below a staffed summit hut when thick fog closes in at a trail junction. The trailhead is four hours back down, and dark comes in three. Your map shows two routes up from here, one along an exposed ridge. Liang, an older hiker coming down alone, stops beside you.

The scene

Emil: Come on, the hut's an hour away. I say we go up.

Liang: The path above was fine for me. Slippery in spots, that's all.

Liang: Honestly, I'm not sure which fork I took. And it's thicker now.

Emil: Your map, your call. But that's a long walk down in the dark.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you decide, and how would you explain it to Emil?
  2. 2How do you make a decision when the information you most need is missing?

What raters look for
