The door closes in twenty

You are flying to a wedding where you are giving a speech tomorrow afternoon.

At the departure gate, your friend Patrick, who is traveling as your guest and has never flown before, cannot find his passport; he last had it at security. Jurgen, the gate agent, is at the desk in front of you. This is the last flight today.

The scene

Patrick: It's not here. I had it at security. Just go without me.

Jurgen: The door closes in twenty minutes. Security's fifteen each way. I can't hold the flight.

Patrick: You're giving the speech tomorrow. I'll catch the morning one. Somehow.

Jurgen: Tomorrow's flights are full. It'd be standby. Are you boarding or not?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do in the next twenty minutes, and why?
  2. 2When someone tells you to go ahead without them, how do you decide whether to take them at their word?

What raters look for

Problem solving
Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
