The quiet car
You are the attendant on a packed commuter train.
In the quiet car's vestibule, Cedric, a passenger, stops you about a high school field-trip group seated farther down the car. Their chaperone, Imran, has followed him out.
The scene
Cedric: I picked the quiet car to prepare for a hearing. They haven't stopped once.
Imran: I've asked them three times. Every other car is full, I checked.
Cedric: Then the sign on that door means nothing.
Imran: Thirty students can't stand in the aisles for an hour. Where should we go?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Cedric and Imran?
- 2When a rule cannot be fully kept, what does a fair compromise look like?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
