Six dollars until Friday
You are one of four strangers stranded at a train station late at night, and two of them have turned to you.
The last train was canceled, and you and three other strangers agreed to share the only taxi across the city, about eighty dollars in all. The fourth rider is already in the back seat. At the taxi stand, Yasmin speaks up before getting in, and Henrik answers.
The scene
Yasmin: I should've said sooner. I have six dollars until Friday.
Henrik: I'm sorry. It has to be equal. I've got exactly twenty and a sitter on the clock.
Yasmin: It's fine. I'll sit inside until the first train at six.
Henrik: I don't like that either. You've been quiet. What do we do?
The two questions
- 1What would you suggest, and why?
- 2When people share a cost, should everyone pay the same? Why or why not?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
