Your school's pre-health office

Start here. Many pre-health advising offices run free mock interviews for students and alumni, often one per cycle and only once you have an invitation, so save it for an important interview. No office? Try your career center. UBC's medical school adds: “it is unnecessary to pay a lot of money to preparatory organizations.”

Northwestern: Health Professions Advising

One mock interview per student, per application cycle, once you have at least one interview invitation.

“Mock interviews are available to students who have applied to medical school and have received one or more interview invitations.” Northwestern's page

University of Florida: C.L.A.S. Pre-Health Advising

One mock interview appointment, whatever the format of your interviews. The career center also offers mocks and a practice platform called Quinncia.

“regardless of additional interviews or different interview modalities or types” University of Florida's page

Duke: Health Professions Advising

Mocks from August to April for Trinity and Pratt students and alumni, about 7 to 10 business days before the interview. Duke asks you to practice on Big Interview or similar first.

“available for students and alumni of Trinity or Pratt registered with Duke HPA from August-April” Duke's page

Michigan State (Lyman Briggs College): Pre-Health Prep Program

An interview strategies workshop, then virtual mock interviews with alumni volunteers who are medical students or graduates.

“Pre-Health Prep Program mock interviews are reserved for students who took part in our Interview Strategies workshop” Michigan State (Lyman Briggs College)'s page

AAMC's free interview resources

The AAMC keeps its interview guides on one free page. Its MMI page gives the timing to practice with: “Each mini interview includes a two-minute prep period before engaging in a conversation that lasts between five to eight minutes.”

Practice with a partner

A partner gives you a real reaction and a follow-up question. In our sign-up survey, 72% have no mock interview partner, and among those who do, the most common complaint is that partners are too nice or not honest (34%), ahead of scheduling (32%). So ask for honesty out loud. No partner? Here is how to practice for the MMI alone.

Where to find a partner
  • Classmates applying this cycle, through your pre-health office or pre-med club.
  • A medical student you know, or alumni through your school's advising office.
  • Another applicant from an interview day or an online applicant group, over video.
  • Anyone who can read a prompt and watch a clock, for structure and time practice.
How to run a peer MMI with a timer
  1. Pick prompts your partner hasn't shown you. Your partner chooses from a question list you haven't read, so the prompt is new to you, as it will be on the day.
  2. Run the real clock. Two minutes to read, then eight minutes to talk, which our MMI timer sets by default. The AAMC puts the talking part at 5 to 8 minutes, so match your school's format.
  3. Your partner asks one follow-up. A simple why, or a change to the scenario. Follow-ups are where real interviewers test whether your reasoning holds.
  4. Score before you talk. Your partner notes one thing that worked and one thing to change before either of you discusses it. Then swap roles.
  5. Do four stations each, then stop. More stations in one sitting rarely help. Fix the one habit you both noticed before the next session.
Partner etiquette
  • Agree on time and length up front, and keep to it.
  • Bring prompts for your partner, not only for yourself.
  • Give one specific note, not a grade. "You never said what you'd do" helps more than "good job."
  • Ask for honesty out loud, so your partner knows kind but vague notes won't help you.
  • Keep each other's stories private.

Free tools, no account

On our site, with no sign-up: MMI timer, tell me about yourself template, STAR method template and medical school interview questions. The MMI timer defaults to a 2-minute read and an 8-minute answer.

Frequently asked questions

Can you prepare for medical school interviews for free?

Yes. Book your pre-health office's mock interview, read the AAMC's interview guides, practice with a partner on a timer and use the free tiers of AI interviewers for extra reps. UBC's MD admissions page says "it is unnecessary to pay a lot of money to preparatory organizations." Paid help is a choice, not a requirement.

What are the best free programs to prepare for medical school interviews, and who provides them?

Your own school's pre-health or career office (mock interviews, often one per cycle), the AAMC (free guides, an MMI explainer and a mock interview video) and AI interviewers with free tiers: the Student Doctor Network's AI Interview Coach, MMI Practice, Deepmock, ammino.ai, Intervly, MedInterview.ai and Confetto. Which one suits you depends on your interview format and how many reps you need.

Where can I find an MMI practice partner?

Ask your pre-health office or pre-med club for classmates applying this cycle, reach out to a medical student or alum, or practice with another applicant over video. Deepmock also offers free peer review. Run each station on a real timer and ask your partner for one honest note.

Is there a free AI mock interview for medical school?

Yes, several, each with a limit as of October 2026: the SDN AI Interview Coach (10 sessions a month on a standard account), MMI Practice (1 live interview), Deepmock (8 AI analyses a week), ammino.ai (3 stations), Intervly (3 mock interviews), MedInterview.ai (1 mock) and Confetto (3 mock interviews in the free trial).

Are there free MMI bootcamps or workshops?

Some pre-health offices run free interview workshops. Michigan State's Lyman Briggs College holds an Interview Strategies workshop before its mock interviews, and The Medic Portal runs free webinars for UK applicants. A peer MMI on a timer, four stations each, is the same drill for free.

Are free MMI practice questions with feedback enough?

For many applicants, yes, as long as the feedback is specific. Free AI tiers score a few answers a week, and a partner can tell you what an AI misses. If you want many scored stations close to your interview, compare paid options by cost per mock first. See what interview prep costs.
