Making the early shift official
You work the counter at a bakery and have been asked to help the owner recognize a longtime coworker's extra work.
Before opening, owner Aurelia, 33, and employee Aubin, 63, discuss making his years of unofficial early prep into a paid lead role. After several exhausting shifts, Aurelia proposes scheduled backup and shared prep duties. This would change coworkers' assignments, so the team needs an explanation. Aubin dislikes public attention and worries that sharing the work means losing the contribution he takes pride in.
The scene
Aurelia: I'd like to recognize your work, with a raise and scheduled backup.
Aubin: The raise would help. Just don't gather everyone to thank me, please.
Aurelia: They'll need their new assignments explained, and you can't cover every absence.
Aubin: I'm willing to share mornings, but I'd still like responsibility for prep.
The two questions
- 1How would you help Aurelia and Aubin formalize the role and explain the changed responsibilities to coworkers?
- 2How can someone adapt when work they take pride in becomes difficult to sustain alone?
What raters look for
- Empathy
- Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
