Should vaccines be required for school?

You sit on the parent council of an elementary school.

The school board is deciding whether to require all students to be up to date on routine vaccinations to attend, with only medical exemptions. Measles cases have appeared in the region. Some parents say the rule protects children who cannot be vaccinated; others say it takes away a family's choice, and several families have said they would switch to homeschooling. The board has asked the council for its recommendation.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend, and why?
  2. 2When is it fair to limit individual choice to protect public health?

A sample answer, and how to improve it

A typical first attempt at question 1 scores 5.5 on the 1–9 scale raters use. Confetto's Casper coach rewrites it line by line to 7.5, with the reason for each change.
