Betting lounges downtown
You are a resident serving on your town's advisory panel.
The town council has asked the panel whether to permit two sports-betting lounges downtown. Their license fees would pay for after-school programs that are otherwise due to close in June, and supporters say adults can decide how to spend their own money. Walid, who chairs the panel and runs a debt-counseling service, says the households he sees are already struggling, yet admits that people can bet on their phones anyway, so a ban may protect no one. The written recommendation is due Friday, and he asks for yours.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend, and why?
- 2What similar debate happening today does this remind you of, and what does it show about how far a community should go to protect adults from their own choices?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Ethics
- Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
