Scene to read · Problem solving, Equity
Certified only
You coordinate evening programs at a community center and are hosting tonight's free legal information session on unpaid wages.
The Mandarin interpreter booked for the session has not arrived. Dmitri, the organizer from the legal aid group presenting it, follows a policy that only certified interpreters may be used. Chun has come with her coworker Mrs. Lin, who speaks little English, has a wage claim due on Monday, and is waiting out in the hallway. The next session is in a month.
The scene
Chun: The interpreter isn't coming. Let me translate for Mrs. Lin. Her claim's due Monday.
Dmitri: Only certified interpreters. I could allow the general slides, not her own case.
Chun: Her own case is why she came. General slides won't file a claim.
Dmitri: One wrong word about a deadline and she's worse off. It's your session, though.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and why?
- 2How do you decide when a safeguard is protecting people and when it is shutting them out?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
