The list in the manager's drawer
You are a volunteer assigned to check on residents of this apartment building during a heat wave.
It is early afternoon in the lobby of a twelve-story building, and a heat advisory is in effect through the weekend. Marigold, the volunteer organizer, has asked you to start visiting residents. Marius, the building manager, keeps a list of older residents living alone. Today you have a few hours, and the elevator is slow.
The scene
Marigold: Marius, those residents are most at risk. Could we see your list?
Marius: Sorry, I can't. They gave me details trusting I'd keep them private.
Marigold: We knock on all two hundred doors, and some people won't answer.
Marius: Your call. I won't hand over the list, but won't stop you.
The two questions
- 1What would you do next, and why?
- 2How do you decide when helping people quickly is worth giving up some of their privacy?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
