Two weeks of self-service holds
You are a part-time library assistant, and both librarians have asked you how to run the trial.
In a library workroom full of returned-book carts, Apolline, a librarian of thirty years, and Araminta, a newer librarian, are planning a two-week trial of self-service holds. They have asked you to design how it runs.
The scene
Araminta: Two weeks is reversible. Let's test self-service holds at every branch desk.
Apolline: Our regulars will be confused and blame us. I'd limit it.
Araminta: A tiny trial proves nothing, Apolline. We'd just repeat this talk.
Apolline: Fine, I won't field every complaint alone. Assistant, what's our plan?
The two questions
- 1How would you design the two-week trial, and why?
- 2How do you decide whether a test is large enough to teach you something without causing too much disruption?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
