Cards at the front door
You are a volunteer member of your neighborhood community center's users' committee.
After complaints about crowding at the entrance and three thefts from the lobby this spring, the center's director, Imogen, has proposed member-card-only entry. She has made clear she favors it. Members who reported stolen bags and long restroom lines have a point. So do the day laborers and unhoused neighbors who rely on the lobby, restrooms and job board and could not easily get cards. Imogen has asked you to weigh the arguments and recommend what, if anything, should change before the board votes next week.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend to Imogen, and why?
- 2Describe a time when two groups you were responsible to both had legitimate needs that pulled in opposite directions. How did you handle it?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
