Half the roses
You work at a flower shop.
It is noon on Saturday. The wholesaler delivered half the white roses you ordered, enough for only one of two orders due this afternoon: funeral flowers for two o'clock and a wedding arch for two-thirty. The owner, Faye, and the driver, Mick, are at the counter with you.
The scene
Faye: Enough roses for one order. The funeral family ordered first. The wedding paid triple.
Mick: The wholesaler's an hour each way. If I go, nothing's delivered before two-fifteen.
Faye: Or we mix in the pink ones and hope nobody minds.
Mick: I leave now or not at all. What's the plan?
The two questions
- 1What would you suggest?
- 2When you cannot meet two commitments, how do you decide which comes first?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
