Lamps or laptops
You help run a monthly repair café in a community hall.
The café has one staffed table for three hours. The volunteers who mend clothes and rewire lamps are booked solid by older regulars such as Esperanza, who brings her sewing machine every month and says this is the one place left that still fixes things. Younger visitors keep asking for phone and laptop repairs and leave when they are told no. Two volunteers with those skills have offered to join, but only if they get half the table's hours. The organizers ask you to recommend how to split the time.
The two questions
- 1What would you recommend, and how would you explain it to regulars like Esperanza?
- 2How do you decide when a service should change to reach new people and when it should stay loyal to those it already serves?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
