The old roller rink
You sit on a neighborhood advisory board whose vote goes to the city.
A roller rink that closed four years ago, a century old and loved by longtime residents, stands on the only lot large enough for a full-service grocery store. The nearest one is a forty-minute bus ride away. A grocer will build if the rink comes down. A restoration group led by your neighbor Jelani has raised a third of what it needs and has no firm plan for the rest. At tonight's public comment, people spoke with feeling on both sides. The board is split evenly, and your vote breaks the tie.
The two questions
- 1How would you vote, and what would you say to the people on the losing side?
- 2How should a community weigh what a place means to people against what the people living there need now?
What raters look for
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
