An extra zero

You are organizing tonight's neighborhood talent night with your co-organizer, Ngoc.

You ordered thirty folding chairs for the community hall, at a fee charged per chair delivered; your budget covers thirty. A truck with three hundred has backed up to the loading door, and the order form shows your typo. Jin, the driver, holds the paperwork. The rental office opens in an hour, and the hall has no other seating.

The scene

Jin: Three hundred chairs, one order line. I unload it all or none.

Ngoc: Three hundred! We have forty guests. You typed an extra zero. I can't breathe.

Jin: No signature, and redelivery's tomorrow. Refunds are the office's business, not mine.

Ngoc: Okay, I'm done laughing. Mostly. Do we sign for all that?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Jin?
  2. 2What matters most in the first few minutes after you discover your own mistake?
