Should the university end animal research?
You sit on your university's student senate.
A petition with 2,000 signatures asks the university to end all research on animals on campus. Researchers say their work on a drug for a childhood cancer cannot yet be done without testing on mice, and that the lab follows strict animal welfare rules. Petitioners say alternatives such as cell cultures and computer models are improving and that the university should lead the way. The senate votes this week on whether to endorse the petition.
The two questions
- 1How would you vote, and why?
- 2How should we weigh possible benefits to people against harm to animals?
A sample answer, and how to improve it
A typical first attempt at question 1 scores 5 on the 1–9 scale raters use. Confetto's Casper coach rewrites it line by line to 7, with the reason for each change.
