AMCAS Personal Statement Character Limit (2027)

The AMCAS personal statement (the Personal Comments Essay) is limited to 5,300 characters, including spaces. The AAMC calls that about one page, and AMCAS shows an error if you go over. The same essay goes to every MD school on your list, and you can't change it after you submit. AACOMAS also allows 5,300, TMDSAS and CASPA 5,000, and ADEA AADSAS 4,500.

The AMCAS personal statement character limit

The 2027 AMCAS Applicant Guide: “The space allotted for the essay is 5,300 characters (including spaces), or about one page.” “You will receive an error message if you exceed the character limit.” The 2027 AMCAS Application Workbook gives the same number (“Personal Comments space available is 5,300 characters”) and says how it counts: “All listed character counts are inclusive of letters and spaces.”

How long is that in words? AMCAS counts characters, not words. By our arithmetic, 5,300 characters is about 880 words if your words average six characters with the space after each, and about 960 at five and a half. Count characters, not words, before you paste.

The guide frames the essay with three questions: “Why have you selected the field of medicine?” “What motivates you to learn more about medicine?” “What do you want medical schools to know about you that has not been disclosed in other sections of the application?” It also says “Consider and write your Personal Comments Essay carefully, as many admissions committees place significant weight on the essay.” For what to put in it, see our medical school personal statement guide.

Applying to Texas schools too? TMDSAS asks for 5,000 characters, so an AMCAS draft needs about 300 characters cut before it fits. Its page reminds you: “Remember that the character count includes spaces.” For the Work and Activities numbers in context, see our AMCAS Work and Activities guide. The PA, dental and residency versions have their own guides: PA school personal statement, dental school personal statement and residency personal statement.

How to trim your personal statement to 5,300 characters

Our steps, in the order we'd do them. The 5,300 is a ceiling. The 2027 guide sets a maximum and no minimum, so a statement that makes its point in fewer characters is fine.

1. Count in plain text first

Paste the draft into a plain text editor and read its character count with spaces. Then paste it into the AMCAS field, since that field's count is the one that decides.

2. Cut what the rest of the application already says

Hours, titles, dates and lists of activities live in Work/Activities. Keep the meaning of an experience here and drop the logistics.

3. Cut stated lessons

If a scene already shows what you learned, a closing sentence that names the lesson can usually go.

4. Keep one scene per idea

When two stories make the same point, keep the stronger one and give it the space.

5. Trim the opening and the close

Openings that set the stage and endings that restate the whole essay are often the easiest places to cut.

6. Tighten line by line last

Swap long phrases for short ones ("in order to" becomes "to") and drop filler words like "really" and "very".

AMCAS also notes “It isn’t necessary to repeat information reported elsewhere in your application.” That makes hours, titles and activity lists the first things to cut, since Work/Activities already holds them. After you submit, schools send secondary essays with their own limits. Our secondary essay examples page lists real prompts and limits from 17 schools.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AMCAS personal statement character limit?

5,300 characters including spaces, which the AAMC describes as about one page. AMCAS shows an error message if you go over.

How many words is the AMCAS personal statement?

AMCAS counts characters, not words. By our arithmetic, 5,300 characters is about 880 words if your words average six characters with the space after each, and about 960 at five and a half.

Do line breaks count toward the AMCAS limit?

The 2027 AMCAS Applicant Guide says characters include spaces but doesn't say how line breaks count. Check the count in the AMCAS field itself. AACOMAS and CASPA say carriage returns count.

Is the AACOMAS personal statement limit the same as AMCAS?

Yes, both are 5,300 characters. The AACOMAS help center says spaces, carriage returns and punctuation all count, and you can't save an essay over the limit.

Can I edit my AMCAS personal statement after I submit?

No. The AAMC says no changes, including fixes to typos, may be made after you submit. The same essay goes to every medical school you apply to.
