Worried about the kids you babysit

You babysit two young children for a neighbor several evenings a week.

Over the last month the fridge has often been nearly empty, the children have worn the same clothes for days, and the older one asked if you could bring food next time. Their mother, a single parent working two jobs, has always been warm with you and recently said money is tight. A friend says you should call child protective services; you worry that would make things worse for the family.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and why?
  2. 2When should concern for someone's welfare lead you to involve the authorities?

A sample answer, and how to improve it

A typical first attempt at question 1 scores 6.5 on the 1–9 scale raters use. Confetto's Casper coach rewrites it line by line to 7.5, with the reason for each change.

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Ethics
Weighs competing duties honestly, protects people from harm, and stays accountable to rules and values.
