A fuel fee for climate action
You sit on the council of a small town.
The council is voting on a fee on gasoline sold in town to pay for electric buses and cut emissions. Most residents drive long distances to work, and there is no transit yet. The fee would add about $30 a month for a typical commuter, and gas stations near the town line expect customers to buy elsewhere. Supporters say every town has to start somewhere on climate change; opponents say it punishes the people with the fewest options.
The two questions
- 1How would you vote, and why?
- 2Who should bear the costs of acting on climate change?
A sample answer, and how to improve it
A typical first attempt at question 1 scores 6 on the 1–9 scale raters use. Confetto's Casper coach rewrites it line by line to 7, with the reason for each change.
See the sample answerWhat raters look for
- Equity
- Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
- Problem solving
- Gathers facts before acting, considers options and consequences, and chooses a workable next step.
