How offers are decided
The Admissions Committee alone decides who gets an offer. Pitt does not publish how much the interview counts.
- Rolling. Offers start on the national earliest acceptance date and continue until the 80-seat class is filled.
- Phone first. Applicants hear by phone, followed by a written offer.
- Deposit order matters. A $2,000 deposit is required. Seats fill in the order deposits arrive, so an offer alone does not guarantee a seat.
- Conditions. Offers depend on Pitt's Essential Program Standards and an FBI background check.

The Admissions Committee of faculty, alumni and upper-level students reviews files as they arrive. Only complete AADSAS files with the fee are considered.

How to prepare
Faculty interviews reward clear stories that show who you are and why dentistry.
- Show real exposure. Pitt wants personal exposure to dentistry. Have two or three specific moments from shadowing or dental work you can describe in detail.
- Show maturity. Pick a setback or mistake, and say what you did next and what you changed.
- Use Pitt's values. Service, passion for excellence, professionalism and integrity, leadership, collaboration and humanism. Match a story to each.
- Know the mission. Pitt aims to improve oral health through teaching, research and service. Know which of the three you care about most, and why.
Reapplying? Pitt suggests applying early, two terms of post-bacc study, a science master's, more dental volunteering and shadowing, or a better-prepared DAT retake.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a Faculty interviews station, written for applicants to University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
Think of the dentist you shadowed who had the best chairside manner. What specific words or actions did they use to build trust with a new patient in the first few minutes?
Describe the exact words or actions you saw, and what you would copy in your own practice.
You've spent a lot of time shadowing. What's the most tedious or repetitive part of a dentist's day, and how do you know you'll be happy doing it for thirty years?
Name something real you observed, then explain honestly why it does not put you off.
Tell us about a time you damaged equipment or materials that belonged to someone else. How did you break the news to them?
Show that you told them quickly and directly, took responsibility and fixed what you could.
Tell me about a time you made a mistake you couldn't fix right away, and you had to live with the consequences for a while before you could make it right.
Be specific about the mistake, how you handled the wait, and what you did once you could fix it.
In rural areas without a local dentist, people with toothaches often end up in the emergency room, where they get pain relief or antibiotics but no dental treatment. If you practiced in a nearby town, how could you reach these patients?
Offer concrete ideas, like partnering with the hospital or holding outreach clinics, and be realistic about limits.
Shadowing shows you the clinical side, but running a practice means leading a team. What was the most effective thing you saw a dentist do to lead their assistants or front desk staff?
Pick one specific moment, explain why it worked, and say how you would lead that way yourself.
