What happens at the interview
Tufts gives the interview window and one detail of the session. It does not describe the format.
- Written invitations. Applicants selected for an interview are notified in writing, starting in late August 2026.
- September to spring. Interview sessions run from September 2026 to spring 2027.
- Financial aid. Tufts' financial aid program is discussed during the interview session.
- Format not published. Tufts does not say who interviews you, how long it lasts, or whether it is online or in person.
Use the financial aid session. Come with one or two money questions written down. It is easier to ask them on the day than to chase answers later.
How offers are decided
Tufts does not publish how the interview is scored or when it sends offers. ADEA's traffic guidelines set the earliest offer date and response times.
- December 15. ADEA's traffic guidelines say schools may not tell applicants of acceptance before December 15.
- 30 or 15 days to answer. Offers made from December 15 to January 31 give you at least 30 days to respond. From February 1, that can drop to 15 days.
- Background checks. All offers depend on a Dean's Certification of Disciplinary History form and a criminal background check.
- After you deposit. Financial aid application packets are mailed to accepted applicants who place a deposit at Tufts.
How you get an interview
Tufts reviews your AADSAS application, which must include a personal statement on why you want a career in dentistry. Its process is paperless, so everything goes through AADSAS.
- 75 shadowing hours. At least 75 hours of exposure to dentistry through shadowing, with at least 40 with a general dentist. Dental research and community service are encouraged too.
- DAT. Scores are valid for 2026-27 only if taken after June 1, 2024. Tufts lists competitive scores of 420 Academic Average and 410 in Reading, Biology and Total Science, all from your most recent test.
- Letters. Two from science professors and a third from someone like a dentist, community service supervisor or research mentor. A pre-professional committee letter also works.
- $90 supplemental fee. Tufts tells you about its supplemental requirements, including a $90 fee, once it receives your AADSAS application.
- No AP credit. Prerequisites earned through AP credit are not recognized. You must retake them or take the same number of upper-level credits at a four-year school.
Grades and eligibility
Prerequisites need a letter grade of C or higher, and Tufts encourages a B or higher to be competitive. A degree from a four-year college is required to start.
You must be a US citizen or permanent resident, or an international student with a bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited school in the US or Canada.
Don't send extras. Tufts asks applicants not to send additional documents or updates to its office. It says doing so delays your review.

Students begin seeing patients in April or May of their second year and spend five weeks in community health centers. Tufts wants its graduates to be skilled communicators, health advocates and compassionate caregivers.
How to prepare
With no published format, prepare strong stories from your shadowing and service and practice saying them out loud.
- Know your general dentist hours. Tufts requires 40 hours with a general dentist. Be ready to describe that practice, its patients and what you learned.
- Explain why dentistry. Tufts asks for a personal statement on your motivation for dentistry. Expect to go deeper on it in person.
- Think about teams and ethics. Tufts wants graduates who behave ethically and are valuable team members. Practice a few scenarios on honesty and teamwork.
- Practice both styles. Rehearse a relaxed one-on-one conversation and short timed scenarios, since you won't know which until your invitation.
Bring the patient into it. When you talk about shadowing, describe a patient interaction you saw, not just procedures. It shows you understand the human side of the job.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a Interview (format not published) station, written for applicants to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
Think of the dentist you shadowed who had the best chairside manner. What specific words or actions did they use to build trust with a new patient in the first few minutes?
Give exact details you observed, then say how you would use them yourself.
While shadowing, what's the most effective way you saw a dentist get a patient to improve their brushing or flossing without sounding like they were scolding them?
Focus on the communication technique, and why it worked for that patient.
A mobile dental clinic visits a rural school once a year, and follow-up care is almost impossible to arrange. What are the ethical pros and cons of providing one-time treatment there?
Weigh real benefit against the risk of unfinished care, and suggest ways to make the visits safer and more useful.
A patient with gum disease needs a deep cleaning but insists on a regular cleaning and polish because it's cheaper and faster. How do you talk with them?
Explain the risks in plain words, respect their concerns about cost, and offer options without pressure.
Many physicians work for large hospitals or health systems, while many dentists work in small private offices, often as the owner. How does that small-business setting factor into your choice of dentistry?
Be honest about what appeals to you and what worries you, and show you know business decisions affect patient care.
Tell us about a time you had to mediate a dispute between two peers who refused to work together on a shared project.
Show how you listened to both sides, found common ground and got the work done.
