What happens on the interview day
UTHealth Houston calls the interview a substantive step in admissions. It works both ways: the committee learns about you, and you learn about dentistry and the school.
- Who interviews. An Admissions Committee member or designee conducts every interview. The committee includes faculty, students and ex officio members.
- It is scored. The interviewing committee member scores you, and that score adds to your overall evaluation.
- It digs deeper. The interview is used to look further into the admissions criteria, from communication skills to integrity.
- Format not published. The school does not say how long the interview lasts or whether it is online or in person.
Bring questions. The interview is also meant to give you information about the program, so ask about what matters to you.
How offers are decided
The Dental Admissions Committee considers the whole application and picks the class on its total evaluation. These are the factors it names.
- Intellectual capacity. Grades, test scores, honors, research, how hard your program was, and the personal interview.
- Communication. Service, leadership, work history, cultural awareness, your essay, and what you say in the interview.
- Knowledge of the profession. Your understanding of access to care, its social and financial side, and the effort you made to learn about dentistry.
- Service to Texas. Your goals, hometown, any link to a Health Professions Shortage Area, and language skills that fit the area you want to serve.
- Motivation and integrity. Overcoming adversity, working during college and heavy course loads, plus professional evaluations and your record.
- Essential skills. Fine motor dexterity, coordination and observational skills needed for clinical work.
How you get an interview
Interviews are by invitation only. The committee's first screen is academic.
- Grades. Overall and science GPA, whether your grades rose or fell over time, and your total credit hours.
- DAT. The Survey of the Natural Sciences, Reading Comprehension and the Perceptual Ability Test.
- Letters. An evaluation from a health professions advisor or committee, or from two professors, plus a letter from a practicing dentist.
- Coursework. At least 90 semester hours, with required science, English and statistics courses passed with a C or better.
- Texas preference. Qualified Texas residents are given preference.

How to prepare
UTHealth Houston lists exactly what it weighs, so build your answers around those factors.
- Know access to care. The school values understanding the social and financial side of access to care. Be ready to discuss why people in Texas go without dental care.
- Say where you will serve. Potential service to Texas is a named factor. Have an honest answer about where and whom you hope to treat.
- Show your hands. Psychomotor skills are a named factor. Have an example of fine, careful work with your hands.
- Know the school. Students train in the Texas Medical Center, practice on virtual patients in a simulation center, and can pursue a DDS/MPH.
Practice out loud. Rehearse short answers about your motivation and a time you overcame a setback. Both are named factors.
Practice questions

Give a balanced view of access and quality, and offer at least one other way to reach rural patients.
What challenges do you think an immigrant who doesn't speak English faces when trying to get dental care, and how could a dental practice reduce them?
Go beyond language to cost, trust and paperwork, and offer practical steps a practice could take.

Describe the task, how you kept your control, and what you learned about pacing yourself.
You are a new associate dentist. The actor plays your lead dental assistant, who pulls you aside and says they often see the senior partner skipping important sterilization steps to save time between patients. Respond to the assistant.
Thank the assistant, take it seriously, and lay out how you will check the facts and protect patients.
You work at a community clinic that sets fees on a sliding scale by income. A patient who qualifies for the lowest fee tier casually mentions they just bought a luxury car. How do you handle this?
Avoid jumping to conclusions, follow the clinic's process, and keep the patient's care the priority.
Tell me about a time you got feedback on your dental school application, or from a pre-dental advisor, that you disagreed with at first. How did you handle it?
