What happens on the interview day

Iowa says it tries to make the day informative, relaxed and fun. It has two parts.

  • Getting to know the program. A pre-interview orientation, student panels, an alumni panel and a tour of the Carver College of Medicine.
  • The MMI. A multiple mini interview session, followed by a debrief for candidates. Iowa does not publish how many stations there are or how long each lasts.
  • What the interviewers look for. Academic potential, knowledge of the PA role in health care, maturity, self-assurance, strong communication with others and with yourself, and motivation.

Use the panels. Students and alumni are there to answer questions. Ask about learning alongside medical students and about rural rotations.

How offers are decided

Being interviewed does not mean you are admitted. Iowa makes offers on a rolling basis to candidates who meet its selection criteria.

  • Within two weeks. Offers traditionally come within two weeks of an interview.
  • After the last session. All interviewed candidates are reviewed again, and offers fill the remaining seats. Others go on the alternate list.
  • Alternates. If a seat opens before classes start, the committee picks the alternate who best fits the admitted class.
  • February 1. Every applicant hears whether they have an offer, a place on the alternate list or a denial by this date.

Who got in last year

The class that started in August 2026 averaged a 3.85 cumulative GPA, a 3.82 science GPA, 3,573 hours of health care experience and 234 hours of research. The average age was 24.

How you get an interview

The admissions committee reviews your CASPA application and invites the most competitive applicants.

  • Science grades. Iowa now requires a 3.40 science GPA, overall or over your last 40 semester hours of biology and chemistry, plus a 3.00 cumulative GPA. It counts every grade, including repeated courses.
  • 1,000 hours of direct patient care. Paid, volunteer or research roles can count. Some roles earn partial credit: 75% for a medical scribe, 25% for a pharmacy technician or dental assistant.
  • Three letters. One from a professor or research mentor and one from someone who supervised your health care work. A provider you only shadowed does not count.
  • Your personal narrative. It is one of the criteria for choosing interviewees.

Mind the September 1 cutoff. Iowa wants prerequisites and GPAs final by September 1 of the application year, a month before its October 1 CASPA deadline. For 2027 entry both dates have passed.

Dates and other details

Iowa starts interviewing in July, so an early application gives you more chances at a session.

Dates for 2027 entry

  • July to December 2026. Five interview sessions in Iowa City. The July, August and September sessions have passed. November 6-7 and December 11-12 are still ahead.
  • September 1, 2026. Prerequisites and GPAs had to be final. This has passed.
  • October 1, 2026. CASPA deadline, which has passed. Your application had to be complete and verified, with your 1,000 hours, three letters and any TOEFL score in.
  • February 1, 2027. Every applicant hears by this date: an offer, a place on the alternate list or a denial.
  • August 2027. The class of 25 starts.
  • 2028 entry. Iowa hasn't posted interview dates for the next cycle. Its pages say applications open in April, on the date CASPA sets, with an October 1 deadline. CASPA hasn't posted its 2027-28 opening date. PAEA says each cycle opens on the last Thursday in April.

The program

The program lasts 28 months. PA students take their classroom courses with Iowa's medical students, graded on the same scale, and every student does at least one rural or underserved rotation.

How to prepare

An MMI tests how you think and talk through short, separate scenarios, so practice many of them out loud.

  • Practice timed scenarios. Iowa does not publish station timing, so practice ethics, teamwork and role-play prompts in about two to six minutes each.
  • Know the PA role. Knowledge of the PA role is one of the traits Iowa assesses. Be ready to explain how PAs work with physicians and the team.
  • Show calm confidence. Maturity and self-assurance are also assessed. Practice pausing, organizing your thoughts and owning mistakes plainly.
  • Know your hours well. Your supervisor letter and patient care hours matter, so expect to talk about what you did and who you worked with.

Reset between stations. Each MMI station is a fresh start. If one goes badly, take a breath and give the next one your full attention.

Practice questions

Questions in the style of a MMI (in person) station, written for applicants to University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Physician Associate Program. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.

You are a PA student on a geriatrics rotation. An elderly patient says 'Thank you, doctor' every time you do something. You've corrected them twice, and they wave it off and say, 'Same thing.' What do you do now?

Correct the record kindly and simply, so the patient knows who is caring for them without feeling scolded.

You're a PA student on rotation, and a patient asks you what you think their rash is. You're fairly sure it's eczema, but you haven't discussed it with your preceptor yet. How do you answer?

Be honest that you are a student, avoid guessing and promise a clear answer after you check with your preceptor.

Your supervising physician suggests a treatment plan that doesn't match current clinical guidelines you've just studied, though it isn't dangerous. How would you approach that difference?

Raise it privately and with curiosity, leaving room for the physician to be right.

Suppose a law passed tomorrow giving every PA nationwide full independent practice, removing any required collaboration with physicians. Would you still want to be a PA? Why or why not?

Show that you value the team model, not just the fastest route to practicing alone.

You are a PA. A close friend visiting from out of town forgot their asthma inhaler and asks you to quickly call in a refill so they don't have to go to urgent care. Respond to your friend.

Say no kindly, explain the boundary and help them get safe care another way.

You are a PA. A senior nurse just yelled at you in the hallway because you forgot to sign a required form, which delayed a patient's transfer. Approach the nurse and resolve the conflict.

Own your mistake fully before you mention how the nurse spoke to you.
