Edge Hill Medicine Interview (MMI): Format and Questions
What to expect at Edge Hill's medicine interview, how you get one, and how offers are made.
Edge Hill interviews with an MMI. Last cycle (2026 entry) it was in person in Ormskirk, with 5 to 8 stations of about 7 minutes each after 2 minutes of reading. You are invited if your UCAT total clears that year's cut-off, and offers go to the highest MMI scores. The 2027 entry interview details are still listed as "TBC".
Key facts (2027 entry)
- Format
- Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs). Last cycle (2026 entry) they were in person at the Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre, Ormskirk campus. 2027 entry details are listed as TBC.

- Fee status
- Home fee status only. Applicants assessed as international for fees cannot apply.
- Other routes
- MBChB Medicine with Foundation Year (A110, 6 years) for North West England applicants who meet widening participation criteria. Same UCAT and MMI process.

What the day looked like last cycle (2026 entry)
Edge Hill's interview page still shows its guidance for 2026 entry, and the course pages list the 2027 entry interview details as TBC. Everything in this section is last cycle's guidance, so check for updates if you are invited.
Arriving
- Where. In person at the Clinical Skills and Simulation Centre on the Ormskirk campus.
- Check-in. You reported to Main Reception, then signed in at registration, where your qualifications were checked. There was an introduction before the MMIs started.
- Photo ID. It was checked before the MMIs.
- How long. The school asked candidates to allow about 2.5 hours.
The stations
- 5 to 8 stations. Including 1 rest station. Your starting station is picked at random.
- 10 minutes each. You get 2 minutes to read each scenario, then the station typically lasts 7 minutes, then you have 1 minute to move on.
- What you do. At a station you either discuss a scenario or talk about things relevant to studying medicine.
- Scoring. Interviewers score each station against standard criteria and do not see your scores from other stations.
- No notes. Notes, prompts and AI tools are not allowed unless agreed as a reasonable adjustment.
Before you go
- Sign the NDA. Last cycle, you had to complete the online Non-Disclosure Agreement form first. You could not be interviewed without it.
- What to bring. Last cycle: original certificates and photocopies (A Levels or equivalent and GCSEs) plus photo ID such as a passport or photo-card driving licence.
Do not share questions afterward. The school says anyone found sharing them, including on social media, will lose any offer.
What the stations assess
Edge Hill's admissions policy says the MMI criteria are mapped onto the NHS Constitution values and the university's own vision and values.
The six NHS Constitution values
Edge Hill's interview page asks you to get familiar with the NHS core values before you come.
- Working together for patients
- Respect and dignity
- Commitment to quality of care
- Compassion
- Improving lives
- Everyone counts
What the school may assess
The school lists the attributes it may assess. Expect many of these across your stations:
- Motivation for studying medicine at Edge Hill in particular
- Communication skills
- Integrity and probity
- Teamwork and leadership
- Empathy and compassion
- Awareness of current health challenges
- Ethical awareness
- Awareness of self and others
- Prioritization and decision making
- Interpreting data
How you get an interview
Edge Hill selects in stages.
- Minimum criteria. Every UCAS application is checked against the minimum academic and eligibility criteria. Applications that fall short go no further.
- UCAT ranking. Everyone left is ranked by total UCAT score. The school decides how many interviews it will hold that year and sets the UCAT cut-off to match.
- The cut-off moves. The threshold changes from year to year with the applicant pool and the number of places.
- SJT band 4. Anyone in band 4 of the Situational Judgement Test is rejected automatically, whatever their other scores.
- Widening participation. The cut-off is extended (lowered) for applicants who meet specific widening participation criteria or who completed Edge Hill's Widening Access to Medicine Programme.
- Statement and reference. They are not routinely used to choose who is interviewed. After the MMI, they may be used to separate applicants whose scores tie at the offer threshold.
How offers are decided
Edge Hill's admissions policy (October 2023, still the version linked from the course pages) sets out how offers are made.
- MMI score. Each station gets a score and the scores are combined. Applicants are ranked by overall MMI score and offers go to the top of the list.
- UCAT at this stage? The policy does not describe adding your UCAT score back in.
- Ties. The personal statement and reference may be used to separate candidates whose scores tie at the threshold.
- 2027 details. The course pages list the 2027 entry scoring details as TBC.
- Timing. Last cycle, decisions came after all interviews were finished and ranked. Reserve lists may be used.
- Conditions. Offers depend on references, DBS and health clearance, and any outstanding grades.
- No feedback. Edge Hill does not give individual interview feedback and does not release station scores.
- No deferral. Deferred entry is not offered, so anyone wanting a later start must reapply and interview again.
Behavior counts too. The school can refuse an offer if your behavior or comments at interview were inappropriate, whatever your score.
Home fees and the Foundation Year route
Both programs are open only to home fee payers.
Fee status
- International fee status. Applicants assessed as international for fees are told they cannot be considered.
- Fee questionnaire. Anyone whose nationality or residency suggests international status is sent a fee assessment questionnaire.
- EU, EEA, Swiss and Irish applicants. The Foundation Year page says EU, EEA and Swiss applicants with settled or pre-settled status, and Irish nationals, are eligible to apply. The MBChB page says they may be eligible for the UK fee rate.
A100: MBChB Medicine (5 years)
The standard MBChB (A100) is 5 years with typical offers of AAA.
A110: Medicine with Foundation Year (6 years)
The MBChB Medicine with Foundation Year (UCAS code A110) is a 6-year widening participation route for local students, with typical offers of BBB.
- Where you live. You must have lived in the North West of England (Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Cheshire or Cumbria) for at least a year immediately before applying.
- Where you went to school. You must have attended a non-selective state school for GCSEs, either one with a below-average Attainment 8 score or while living in a qualifying postcode.
- One more criterion. You must also meet one further criterion, such as household income under £35,000 or parents without a higher education qualification.
- Same selection. Foundation Year applicants go through the same stages: UCAT ranking, then the same MMI.
- Not for graduates. Graduates cannot apply to the Foundation Year.
Dates for 2027 entry
Applications for September 2027 entry are now closed. Edge Hill has not yet published its 2027 entry interview dates.
Last cycle (2026 entry)
- Interview window. Edge Hill's interview page said interviews ran until the end of January.
- Decisions. They were sent only after every interview had been ranked.
- Invitations. They came by email, UCAS showed the interview date and time, and candidates confirmed attendance in UCAS Hub.
How to prepare
- Know the six NHS values. Learn them well enough to give a real example of each from your own life or work experience.
- Have a reason for Edge Hill. Know what makes the course different, such as its clinical placements across the North West of England. Link it to something you have actually done or seen.
- Practice the timing. Last cycle's format was a 2-minute read, then about 7 minutes at the station.
- Practice data and prioritization. Include a short data question and a prioritization task in your practice, since both are on Edge Hill's list.
Edge Hill tells you to study the NHS values. So a vague mention will not stand out.
Practice questions
Questions in the style of a MMI (in person) station, written for applicants to Edge Hill University Medical School. They are practice questions, not the school's own. Open one for what a strong answer does.
Why do you want to study medicine at Edge Hill in particular, rather than at another UK medical school?
Name one or two real features of the course and connect each to your own experience, not to the prospectus wording.
The NHS Constitution sets out core values such as compassion and improving lives. Which of its values do you think is hardest to uphold in a highly pressured clinical environment, and why?
Pick one value, show you understand why pressure strains it, and suggest how a team can protect it.
You are a volunteer on a busy hospital ward. A patient wants a glass of water, a nurse has asked you to take paperwork to another ward, a confused elderly patient is wandering toward the stairwell, and the phone is ringing. What do you do?
Deal with the immediate safety risk first, say out loud why, and explain how you will get help with the rest.
You are shown a chart. In one city, life expectancy in the poorest neighborhoods is ten years lower than in the wealthiest, even though the same NHS hospitals serve both. What non-clinical factors might explain this gap?
Read the data accurately first, then group causes (income, housing, work, diet, access) and avoid claiming more than the chart shows.
You see a fellow medical student sign the attendance sheet for a mandatory lecture and then leave straight away. How does this relate to Good Medical Practice, and what would you do?
Link it to honesty and probity, then choose a proportionate step, starting with a private conversation before escalating.
You are volunteering in a very busy A&E. A frustrated relative demands to know why their mother has not seen a doctor when people who arrived later already have. Respond to the relative.
Acknowledge the worry first, explain triage in plain words without blaming staff, and offer a concrete next step.
Frequently asked questions
