Open with your reason in one sentence: the part of the work that draws you. Then name one patient or rotation moment that made you choose it, then say what you want from training. Interviewers follow up on the specifics, so practice the follow-ups out loud, not just the first answer.
“I like listening to people's stories.” Everyone says it. Show what you did with one story and what changed for the patient. Psychiatry as a way out of medicine. Programs want residents who like medicine too. Mention the medical side, such as delirium, medications or consult work. Your own mental health as the whole answer. Personal experience can be part of it, but the answer should be about patients and the work.
This season, applicants get 10 program signals in ERAS, and programs read them as interest (AAMC, ERAS 2027 program signaling).
