Scene to read · Resilience, Empathy

Every cent on the fifteenth

You work at a small neighborhood print shop.

The owner, Thandiwe, hired you two years ago when nobody else would. At the back counter on payday, she has just told you and your coworker Rafael, who speaks English as a second language, that she cannot pay wages this week.

The scene

Thandiwe: The school order pays on the fifteenth. Two weeks, and you get every cent.

Rafael: In March you said the same. I have bills Friday. I'm leaving today.

Thandiwe: I understand, Rafael. But if you both go, we close. Can you wait for me?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Thandiwe?
  2. 2How do you decide how much of someone else's difficulty to carry because you owe them?

What raters look for

Resilience
Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
