Written scenario · Collaboration, Self-awareness
The motion read aloud
You chair the committee of a debate society.
The committee spent three meetings agreeing on the motion for the annual public debate. At eleven the night before, a judge warned you that the wording left one side almost nothing to argue, so you rewrote it and told no one; the committee found out when it was read aloud. The debate went well. Two members now want a meeting about "how decisions get made." Hari, the society's president, who appointed you, advises you not to apologize: the chair's election is next month, and he says any admission will be used against you.
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to the committee?
- 2When, if ever, does a good outcome justify overriding a decision a group made together?
What raters look for
- Collaboration
- Works toward a shared goal, shares credit and load, and repairs friction inside a team.
- Self-awareness
- Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
