Written scenario · Empathy, Equity

Thanked for your patience

You are studying for a horticulture certificate two evenings a week at a technical college.

Bhavna, a classmate about twice your age, asks you before almost every session to help her find readings and upload assignments on the course website, and it often takes twenty minutes. You have started arriving late to avoid her, and you have caught yourself assuming she will never learn it. Tonight, as groups form for the garden design project, she tells the whole room how patient you have been with her and says she hopes to be in your group. The instructor is waiting for your answer.

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say, and what would you do about the weeks ahead?
  2. 2Describe a time you realized you had been avoiding or underestimating someone. What did you do about it?

What raters look for

Empathy
Recognizes what others feel and need, and lets that shape the response without losing judgment.
Equity
Notices unequal access or treatment and acts fairly, especially for people with less power.
