Carry-out for Harsh
You work the carry-out service at a grocery store.
In the parking lot, you are loading bags into the car of Harsh, 74, a regular who cannot lift them himself. He has just sworn at you and mocked your haircut. Your coworker Abigail walks over from the cart return.
The scene
Abigail: I'll finish this one. I'm asking the manager to take him off carry-out.
Harsh: Go ahead. I can't lift a thing since my shoulder, but go ahead.
Abigail: Then don't talk to people like that. Nobody has to take it.
Harsh: I've had a rotten week. Are you finishing my bags or not?
The two questions
- 1What would you do, and what would you say to Harsh and Abigail?
- 2When, if ever, is it right to stop serving someone who treats you badly but depends on your help?
What raters look for
- Resilience
- Recovers from setbacks, manages stress constructively, and learns from failure.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
