Best Residency Interview Prep: Tools, Services and Free Options (2027 Match)

Residency interview prep for the 2027 Match, compared: free mock interviews, AI tools, human coaches and books, with prices from each provider's own page as of October 2026 and who each one fits.

The best residency interview prep for most applicants is a mix: a free mock interview from your school or a peer group, an AI tool for daily practice out loud, and a human mock if you want a physician to pressure-test your answers. Paid residency AI tools start at $19, and human mock interviews cost $225 to $399 an hour where a price is published.

We make Confetto, so read this as the maker's view. Every price and feature below comes from each provider's own page, checked October 16, 2026. Options are listed by type, not ranked.

Confetto writes questions from the ERAS experiences, personal statement or CV you paste in. MedSchoolCoach's advisors read your ERAS application before a human mock.

Your medical school's mock interviews · Free

A practice interview with faculty or alumni, often in your specialty, with feedback at the end.

Ask your student affairs, advising or alumni office. Many schools run a mock residency interview program each fall.

Example: PCOM pairs fourth-year students with alumni in their specialty for a 30 to 45 minute virtual interview, with 10 to 15 minutes of feedback. It grants one interview per student, first come, first served.

Keep in mind: You usually get one session, so pair it with a way to practice every day.

Peer mock interview groups · Free

Applicants take turns as interviewer and applicant, by video, on their own schedule.

Classmates, co-residents from away rotations or online groups. For the 2027 Match, applicants on r/IMGreddit are forming peer groups in threads like "Peer to Peer Mock Interview Group for 2027 Match".

Write down the questions before you start and give each other one thing to fix per answer.

Keep in mind: Feedback quality depends on your partner, and nobody scores the answer against what programs look for.

380+ residency questions, with 13 specialty question sets. The AI interviewer asks follow-ups on what you actually said, and answers are scored with notes from your video. US answers are rated against the ACGME competencies, Canadian ones against the CanMEDS roles.

Mock interviews are unlimited on every paid plan.

Keep in mind: There are no human coaches and no personal statement editing. For either, pick a coach or ResidencyAI.

The Successful Match (book and course) · Book and course

A book on the whole Match, and a video course on over 25 common residency interview questions.

The Residency Interview 101 course walks through the major questions, from "tell me about yourself" to "why our program", with before-and-after videos.

The book covers what it takes to match: who chooses residents and what they care about.

Keep in mind: A course teaches the answers but doesn't make you say them out loud. Add a mock interview.

How to combine them

  1. Book your school's mock as soon as invitations arrive. Spots are limited and often first come, first served.
  2. Practice out loud every day. Alone, with a peer or with an AI tool, until your answers sound like you and not a script.
  3. Do one or two full mocks in the real format. Add a human mock before your top programs if you want a physician's read.

The full plan is in our guide to how to prepare for residency interviews, and the common questions are in our residency interview questions guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best residency interview prep?

There isn't one best option for everyone. For most applicants the strongest plan is a mix: a free mock interview from their school or a peer group, an AI tool for daily practice out loud, and a human mock if they want a physician's read on their answers. Pick by budget and by what you need most.

How much does residency interview coaching cost?

Where a price is published, human mock interviews cost $225 to $399 an hour. Med School Insiders lists $399 for 1 hour and Elite Medical Prep starts at $225 an hour. MedSchoolCoach and BeMo don't publish prices and quote after a consultation.

Is there a free residency mock interview?

Yes. Many medical schools run faculty or alumni mock interviews each fall, and applicants form peer mock groups online, for example on r/IMGreddit. ResidencyAI gives 3 free single-question credits, Residency Advisor SmartPrep gives 5 free minutes a month, and Confetto has a free trial.

Are AI mock interviews good enough for residency?

They are good for reps: answering out loud, tightening your stories and hearing follow-up questions until the answers feel natural. A person is better at judging fit, specialty culture and how you come across. Many applicants use AI for daily practice and book one human mock before their top programs.

What are the alternatives to ResidencyAI?

The closest AI alternatives are Residency Advisor SmartPrep (monthly practice minutes, 5 free minutes a month) and Confetto (questions written from your own application, free trial). Paid plans for residency AI tools start at $19. If you mainly want personal statement review, a human advisor covers that too.

What is the best book for residency interviews?

Few current books cover only the residency interview. The Successful Match covers the whole Match for $9.99 on its publisher's site, which also sells the Residency Interview 101 course. Each specialty's 2026-27 program directors' guide is free and covers that specialty's interview rules.
