What does a top-quartile answer look like?

Try the questions first, then compare. Each answer below is a top-quartile example from Confetto's Casper scorer, graded by it on the 1 to 9 scale raters use.

  1. Question 1

Tell us about something difficult you chose to take on when nobody expected or required it of you. Why did you do it?

I chose to volunteer at a hospital while working and studying at university. It involved a long commute, a real time commitment, and some emotionally difficult patient interactions, so there were days when it was tiring to fit in. I kept going because I valued being with patients and learning how a hospital works from the inside. The experience also helped me understand whether healthcare suited me. It could be useful experience for a future application, but no one required it for credit; what made the commitment worthwhile was that I found the interactions meaningful.

  2. Question 2

What did you learn about what drives you, and how has that affected the choices you have made since?

I learned that external benefits, like experience for an application, can be part of my motivation, but they won't sustain me on their own. The hospital role showed me that I feel more committed when I genuinely value the work and the people I meet. Since then, I try to pause before taking on an activity and ask whether I care about it beyond how it will look. I also check in and journal while I'm doing it, so I can notice if my reasons or experience have changed rather than continuing only because I feel expected to.

In our scorer's words:

  • You identify concrete costs of volunteering, including the commute, time commitment, and tiring days.
  • You are candid that application experience played some role, while explaining what made the work worthwhile beyond that.
  • You describe a practical reflection habit for checking your motivation over time.
