You are a lifeguard at a busy public pool.

Your fellow lifeguard, Alex, arrives for a Saturday morning shift smelling of alcohol and moving slowly. The pool opens in fifteen minutes and there is no spare staff.

What happens in the scene?

Alex: Hey. Sorry I'm cutting it close. Rough night. I'm fine, I just need coffee. Please don't say anything to the supervisor. I'm already on a warning.

Can you answer both questions in 3.5 minutes?

What does a top-quartile answer look like?

Try the questions first, then compare. Each answer below is a top-quartile example from Confetto's Casper scorer, graded by it on the 1 to 9 scale raters use.

  1. Question 1

How would you respond to Alex's request not to tell the supervisor?

I would take the alcohol smell and slow movements seriously without assuming I know exactly what happened. I'd speak privately with Alex and say I'm concerned he may not be fit to guard. I'd ask if he's okay, but coffee or reassurance would not be enough to resolve a safety concern. I'd explain that I can't keep this from the supervisor because swimmers depend on us, and offer to speak with the supervisor together. I'd report what I observed, not label him drunk. With no spare staff, I'd ask the supervisor to delay opening unless safe coverage can be arranged. I'd also make sure Alex has a safe way home if needed.

  2. Question 2

Describe a time you had to hold a peer to a standard. How did it go?

In a class project, a friend uploaded a section with passages copied from a website without citations. I spoke with him privately before we submitted it and asked whether he'd meant those passages as temporary notes. He said he was rushed and hadn't realized how much he'd copied. I explained that submitting it would violate our course rules and affect everyone in the group. I offered to help find sources, but asked him to rewrite his section himself. He did, and we checked the citations together before submitting. It was awkward initially, but we stayed on good terms. I learned that a clear standard works better when I ask what happened and offer a realistic way to fix it.
