The dull contract

You are the first employee of a small startup run by two founders, Farzana and Benicio.

The company makes a reading app for adults who are learning to read, and payroll is short this month. A shipping firm has offered a well-paid six-month contract for warehouse software, which would take the whole team off the app. In the converted-garage office, the founders turn from each other to you.

The scene

Farzana: We sign it. Six months of dull work, and everyone here gets paid.

Benicio: Six months off the app and our learners are gone. That's why we exist.

Farzana: There's no app if we can't make payroll on Friday.

Benicio: You joined us for the mission. Where do you stand?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you say to Farzana and Benicio?
  2. 2When is it worth setting aside the work you care about in order to keep a team going?
