Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism

Tucked in the calculator cover

You work the overnight front desk of your dormitory and are also the elected voice of your statistics section.

Past midnight Boaz, a third-floor resident in your section, leans on the desk. He says that in this morning's closed-book final he watched Mina, who lives down his hall, look at something tucked inside her calculator cover. Marks will be scaled against the top score. Gang, on desk duty with you, knows Mina well.

The scene

Boaz: Twice, I saw her. You speak for our section. Tell the professor.

Gang: You saw paper, from three rows back. Reports like that follow people for years.

Boaz: And if she did it, the scaling pulls the rest of us down.

Gang: It's one man's word against her whole record. So, what'll you do?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you do, and what would you say to Boaz and Gang?
  2. 2Describe a time you had to decide whether to act on something you had only heard about from someone else. What did you do?
