Written scenario · Ethics, Professionalism

Free entry, or donation first?

You are a volunteer greeting visitors at the ticket booth of a small museum.

The museum's entry is free, and a prominent sign suggests a donation. Staff must answer visitor questions accurately. Your supervisor wants you to mention the suggested donation first, because it keeps programs funded. A colleague wants every welcome to start by saying entry is free. A line is forming, and you must decide today what to say. Propose wording that is transparent without pressuring visitors or suggesting that contributions do not matter.

The two questions

  1. 1What wording would you use to greet visitors, and how would you handle the disagreement between your supervisor and your colleague?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you had to follow an instruction while being honest with the people it affected. What did you do?
