Personal question · Self-awareness, Motivation

Praise or criticism?

Feedback on our work is sometimes short or mixed, such as "interesting approach" or "fine, but not what I expected." It can be hard to tell whether it was meant as praise, criticism or neither.

The two questions

  1. 1Describe a time you were unsure what feedback on your work really meant. What did you make of it at first, and how did you decide what to do with it?
  2. 2Tell us about a time you acted on feedback that was unclear to you. What did you do, what did it show you about your own reactions or what drives you, and would you handle it the same way now?

What raters look for

Self-awareness
Recognizes own biases, limits and emotions, and seeks and uses feedback.
Motivation
Shows genuine, sustained drive and a clear reason for choices, including when work is unglamorous.
