AMCAS GPA calculator

AMCAS turns every grade into a weight from 4.0 (A+ and A) down to 0.0 (F), multiplies it by the course's semester hours and divides the total by your hours. It counts every attempt of a repeated course and leaves out pass/fail, AP and withdrawn courses. Your BCPM GPA uses only biology, chemistry, physics and math. The example transcript below gives a 3.45 cumulative GPA and a 3.45 BCPM GPA.

Example transcript. Replace it with your courses.

Rules from the 2027 AMCAS Applicant Guide and the AMCAS Grade Conversion Guide, checked October 28, 2026. Your verified AMCAS GPA can still differ, since AMCAS converts each grade using your school's own grading system. Nothing you type leaves this page. Confetto is not affiliated with the AAMC, AACOM, PAEA, Liaison or TMDSAS.

How does AMCAS calculate your GPA?

AMCAS converts each transcript grade to an AMCAS grade and weight, multiplies the weight by the course's semester hours to get quality points, and divides your total quality points by your total hours. It counts plus and minus grades even if your school does not, and gives A+ and A the same 4.0.

Schools with half-step grades map to AB 3.5, BC 2.5, CD 1.5 and DE 0.5. Your cumulative undergraduate GPA includes postbaccalaureate courses. Graduate courses get their own GPA.

Which courses count in the BCPM GPA?

AMCAS classifies each course by its main content, not the department that teaches it. Four classifications make up BCPM:

  • Biology: anatomy, cell and molecular biology, genetics, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, physiology and more.
  • Chemistry: general, organic and physical chemistry, and biochemistry.
  • Physics: physics and astronomy.
  • Mathematics: algebra, calculus, statistics and biostatistics.

Everything else goes into your all other (AO) GPA. That includes psychology and sociology, engineering, health sciences such as nutrition or kinesiology, and natural and physical sciences such as geology or environmental science, which the guide says are not in BCPM.

Retakes, AP, pass/fail and withdrawals

  • Repeated courses: AMCAS counts every attempt, even if your school replaced the first grade. Enter the original grade too.
  • Failed courses: they count, even if your school left them out of its GPA.
  • Pass/fail, AP, CLEP and other test credit: no weight. AMCAS reports these as Supplemental Hours.
  • Withdrawals (W), audits and incompletes with no final grade: no weight. Depending on your school, an incomplete failure or an unofficial withdrawal may count as an F.

Quarter hours to semester hours

Enter credits as your transcript shows them and AMCAS converts them. For quarter schools, the AMCAS Grade Conversion Guide uses this table:

Quarter hours1.02.03.04.05.06.0
Semester hours0.71.32.02.73.34.0

What to do with your number

Compare it with each school's median GPA in the AAMC's MSAR, and check both your cumulative and BCPM GPA, since schools see both. To set your GPA beside your MCAT, try the LizzyM score calculator linked below. Applying to DO or Texas schools too? Their GPAs follow different rules, so run the AACOMAS and TMDSAS calculators as well.

Questions people ask

Does AMCAS count an A+ as more than 4.0?

No. The 2027 AMCAS Applicant Guide says AMCAS gives A+ and A the same weight, 4.0.

Does AMCAS replace a grade when I retake a course?

No. AMCAS counts the grades for every attempt of a repeated course, even if your school replaced the first grade. You enter each attempt.

Is statistics part of the BCPM GPA?

Yes. The AMCAS Course Classification Guide lists statistics and biostatistics under Mathematics, which is part of BCPM. Biochemistry counts as Chemistry.

Do pass/fail and AP credits count in my AMCAS GPA?

No. Pass/fail, AP, CLEP and other test credit go into Supplemental Hours, not your GPA. Courses you failed do count, even if your school left them out of its GPA.

Should I enter quarter hours or semester hours?

Enter credits exactly as your transcript shows them. AMCAS converts quarter hours itself, at about two thirds of a semester hour each. This calculator does that conversion for you.
