CASPA GPA calculator

CASPA converts each grade to a numeric value, multiplies it by the course's semester hours and divides your quality points by your attempted hours. It counts all grades for repeated courses, counts a WF as an F, and leaves out pass/fail and AP credit. Your science GPA covers biology, chemistry, physics and other sciences, your BCP GPA drops other sciences, and math counts as non-science. The example transcript below gives 3.45 overall, 3.29 science and 3.35 BCP.

How does CASPA calculate your GPA?

CASPA converts each grade to a numeric value and multiplies it by the course's attempted credits to get quality points. Your GPA is total quality points divided by total attempted credits. CASPA's own example: an A, B, C, D and F in 4, 3, 4, 3 and 3 credit courses give 36 quality points over 17 credits, a 2.12 GPA.

CASPA reports a GPA for each school, each year, your cumulative undergraduate GPA (with post-baccalaureate courses) and an overall GPA that adds graduate courses. This calculator gives the GPA of the courses you enter.

Science, BCP and non-science GPA

  • Science GPA: biology/zoology, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, physics and other science.
  • BCP GPA: the same without other science, so biology, chemistry and physics only.
  • Non-science GPA: English, math, behavioral sciences such as psychology and sociology, and other non-science.

Math, statistics and calculus are non-science on CASPA, unlike on AMCAS. Other science covers subjects such as astronomy, biotechnology and biomedical engineering. If you're not sure which subject a course is, CASPA says to go by the department that offers it, and its team corrects subjects during verification.

Retakes, pass/fail and quarter hours

  • Repeated courses: CASPA does not follow schools' grade replacement or forgiveness policies. All grades for repeated courses count.
  • Non-graded credits such as AP, pass/fail and satisfactory credits stay out of your GPAs.
  • A WF (withdrawn failing) counts as an F.
  • Quarter hours: CASPA uses 1.0 quarter hour = 0.667 semester hours.

Questions people ask

Does CASPA replace retaken grades?

No. CASPA does not follow schools' forgiveness, academic renewal or grade replacement policies, and all grades for repeated courses count in your CASPA GPA.

Is math a science course on CASPA?

No. CASPA's course subject list puts mathematics, including statistics and calculus, in the non-science GPA.

What is the CASPA BCP GPA?

It combines biology/zoology, inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry and physics. Unlike the science GPA, it leaves out the Other Science category.

How does CASPA convert quarter hours?

CASPA calculates every GPA in semester hours, using 1.0 quarter hour = 0.667 semester hours.
