TMDSAS GPA calculator

TMDSAS policy sets a 4.0 scale with whole-letter values only: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0.0. Its coursework guide says C+, C and C- get the same value, so this calculator counts every plus or minus as the plain letter. All grades count, including every attempt of a repeated course, and an F, WF or NC counts as hours with no points. Your BCPM GPA covers biology, chemistry, physics and math, including statistics. The example transcript below gives 3.50 overall and 3.58 BCPM, compared with 3.45 and 3.45 on AMCAS.

How does TMDSAS calculate your GPA?

TMDSAS multiplies each grade point by the course's credit hours, adds the products and divides by your hours, to the hundredth place. Its policy sets a 4.0 scale with whole-letter values only, and its coursework guide says C+, C and C- get the same value. TMDSAS spells this out only for C, so this calculator treats every plus or minus as the plain letter. Here is how that compares with AMCAS:

Transcript gradeTMDSASAMCAS
A+, A, A-4.04.0, 4.0, 3.7
B+, B, B-3.03.3, 3.0, 2.7
C+, C, C-2.02.3, 2.0, 1.7
D+, D, D-1.01.3, 1.0, 0.7
F0.00.0

On that reading, A- grades help you on TMDSAS and B+ grades help you on AMCAS. Enter your grades as your transcript shows them either way.

What counts in the TMDSAS BCPM GPA?

BCPM covers all biology, chemistry, physics and math coursework. Statistics, calculus and general math courses count. Engineering courses go into a separate engineering GPA unless one is already approved as a prerequisite. Everything else goes into your non-BCPM GPA.

Retakes, withdrawals and quarter hours

  • No grade may be expunged. All grades for academic coursework count, so every attempt of a retaken course is in your GPA.
  • An F, WF or NC (or a fail in a pass/fail system) counts as hours with no grade points.
  • Credit by exam (CR), Q, W, WP, incompletes and a pass in a pass/fail system are left out.
  • Quarter hours carry two thirds the value of semester hours, so 3 quarter hours equal 2 semester hours.
  • Coursework from foreign and Canadian schools is left out of the TMDSAS GPA. Schools look at those transcripts directly.

Questions people ask

Does TMDSAS count plus and minus grades?

Its published rules give no plus or minus values. TMDSAS policy sets A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0.0, and its coursework guide says a C+, C and C- get the same grade value. It spells this out only for C, so this calculator treats every plus or minus the same way. You still enter grades as your transcript shows them.

Does TMDSAS replace retaken grades?

No. TMDSAS policy says no grade may be expunged and all grades for academic coursework are used in your GPA.

Which courses are in the TMDSAS BCPM GPA?

Biology, chemistry, physics and math courses, including statistics and calculus. Engineering courses go into a separate engineering GPA unless one is already approved as a prerequisite.

How does TMDSAS convert quarter hours?

Quarter hours carry two thirds the value of semester hours, so 3 quarter hours equal 2 semester hours. You enter quarter hours as they appear on your transcript.
