Science GPA calculator
Your science GPA is the GPA of your science courses only, but each application service draws the line in a different place. AMCAS and TMDSAS count biology, chemistry, physics and math (BCPM). AACOMAS and CASPA count biology, chemistry, physics and other sciences, and put math in the non-science GPA. The example transcript below gives a 3.45 BCPM GPA for AMCAS, 3.29 for AACOMAS and CASPA, and 3.58 for TMDSAS.
Example transcript. Replace it with your courses.
Your science GPA by service
- AMCAS BCPM
- 3.45
- AACOMAS science
- 3.29
- CASPA science
- 3.29
- TMDSAS BCPM
- 3.58
Cumulative GPA: 3.45 on AMCAS, 3.50 on TMDSAS (no plus or minus).
A 3.45 BCPM: interviews decide the rest.

What counts as science for each service?
Pick the subject for each course in the calculator, and it sorts the course the way each service does:
| Course subject | AMCAS | TMDSAS | AACOMAS | CASPA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Biology | Science | Science | Science | Science |
| Chemistry or biochemistry | Science | Science | Science | Science |
| Physics | Science | Science | Science | Science |
| Math or statistics | Science | Science | Not science | Not science |
| Other science (geology, nutrition, kinesiology) | Not science | Not science | Science | Science |
| Everything else (English, psych, etc.) | Not science | Not science | Not science | Not science |
- AMCAS calls its science GPA BCPM: biology, chemistry (including biochemistry), physics and math (including statistics). Natural and physical sciences such as geology are not in BCPM.
- TMDSAS also uses BCPM, with statistics and calculus inside it. Its policy lists whole-letter values only (A = 4.0, B = 3.0 and so on), and its coursework guide says C+, C and C- count the same, so this calculator scores an A- as 4.0.
- AACOMAS and CASPA count biology, chemistry, physics and other sciences. Math, statistics included, is in their non-science GPA. CASPA also reports a BCP GPA without other sciences.
How is a science GPA calculated?
Multiply each science course's grade value by its semester hours to get quality points, add them up, and divide by your science hours. A 4-credit A in biology is 16 points and a 4-credit B in physics is 12, so those two alone give 28 / 8 = 3.50. All four services count every attempt of a retaken course and leave pass/fail and AP credit out.
Why your science GPA differs from your school's
- Retakes: your school may replace an old grade. The services count both attempts.
- Plus and minus: AMCAS, AACOMAS and CASPA count them. TMDSAS policy lists whole-letter values only.
- Subjects: a statistics course raises or lowers your AMCAS BCPM but not your CASPA science GPA.
- Quarter hours: the services convert them to semester hours at about two thirds each.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between science GPA and BCPM GPA?
BCPM is the name AMCAS and TMDSAS use for their science GPA: biology, chemistry, physics and math. AACOMAS and CASPA call theirs the science GPA and count other sciences but not math.
Does math count in my science GPA?
For AMCAS and TMDSAS, yes, including statistics. For AACOMAS and CASPA, no. Their help centers list math in the non-science GPA.
Does psychology count as science?
Not on AMCAS, AACOMAS or CASPA. AMCAS lists psychology under Behavioral and Social Sciences, outside BCPM, and AACOMAS and CASPA count behavioral sciences in the non-science GPA.
Why is my science GPA different from my school's?
The services count every attempt of a repeated course, use their own grade weights and convert quarter hours to semester hours. Your school may do none of these.
