Scene to read · Ethics, Professionalism

Minus eighty all night

You work the overnight shift in a hospital's specimen freezer room.

Your friend Neil, at the end of a double shift, skipped three hourly temperature checks; you just watched him fill them in from the current reading. The freezer alarm never sounded. Devendra, the shift supervisor, walks in with the audit folder.

The scene

Devendra: Morning audit's at seven. Was every hourly check actually done tonight, both of you?

Neil: All logged. The alarm never went off, and it's reading minus eighty now.

Devendra: Good, because I'm signing my name under that sheet.

Neil: It's all there. We did them together, didn't we?

The two questions

  1. 1How would you answer Devendra, and what would you say to Neil?
  2. 2When, if ever, is it acceptable to stay silent while a friend says something untrue?
