Scene to read · Ethics, Self-awareness

A reassuring headline

You are a patient-advisory volunteer helping prepare a clinic reception feedback report.

In the hospital volunteer office, Bettina, 54, the volunteer coordinator, and Blaise, 24, a fellow volunteer, review survey cards with you. Most responses are positive, but few quick-leaving visitors participated. The report is promised tomorrow; recontacting consenting visitors would delay it. Bettina has supported your recommendations before and wants a reassuring headline to recognize reception staff's improvements; she asks you to approve the summary.

The scene

Bettina: Could we lead with satisfaction? Reception worked hard on your recommendations.

Blaise: Among respondents, sure. But quick leavers barely answered; that's important context.

Bettina: I don't want tomorrow's headline making their progress sound like failure.

Blaise: Can we recognize their work without implying everyone's experience was positive?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you recommend for the report's presentation, and how would you explain it to Bettina and Blaise?
  2. 2Describe a time you felt pressure to present results favorably because you cared about the people involved. How did you respond?
