Explaining a rule nobody liked
Rules and changes are not always welcome: a new policy at work, a house rule, a schedule change, or a limit you were asked to enforce. Explaining one to someone who is unhappy about it can test your patience.
The two questions
- 1Tell us about a time you had to explain a rule or change to someone who did not like it. What did you say, and how did you keep the conversation respectful?
- 2Describe a time you learned something from a conversation about explaining decisions, and what you would do differently if you faced a similar situation today.
What raters look for
- Communication
- Listens first, speaks clearly and respectfully, and adapts the message to the listener.
- Professionalism
- Is reliable, respects boundaries and confidentiality, and holds a consistent standard under pressure.
