The gate latch again

You are a resident of a small apartment building who has quietly repaired the sticking courtyard gate latch twice.

In the shared courtyard, the latch has stuck again. Your neighbors Lailah, 61, and Laszlo, 31, are waiting by the gate. The building has no manager, and residents jointly decide how to handle small repairs; you enjoy helping, but repeated fixes are taking more of your free time.

The scene

Lailah: I'd chip in for a handyman, rather than leave this to you.

Laszlo: You might miss being our fixer, though. You've always enjoyed helping out.

Lailah: I'm offering support, not criticizing your repairs. Nobody should feel stuck volunteering.

Laszlo: Paying costs everyone more, though. Would you rather keep handling small repairs?

The two questions

  1. 1What would you decide about the gate latch and future small repairs, and what would you say to Lailah and Laszlo?
  2. 2How do you decide when to keep doing a task yourself and when to hand it to someone else?
