Scene to read · Resilience, Communication

After the heckling

You have just spoken at a public meeting in favor of a bike lane on Main Street.

Part of the audience heckled you while you spoke. In the town hall foyer, with people still filing out past you, Lorraine, a resident you do not know, stops you. Kiri, who campaigns with you, is at your side.

The scene

Lorraine: I didn't heckle. But you sounded arrogant, like we're too slow to understand.

Kiri: We don't have to do this. They booed before you'd finished a sentence.

Lorraine: I've lived on that street forty years. Nobody asked us anything.

Kiri: We held three open sessions. Come on, people are staring.

The two questions

  1. 1How would you respond to Lorraine and Kiri?
  2. 2How do you decide which criticism to take on board when it arrives in a hostile setting?
