What changes on an in-person day

Iowa says its two formats are the same interview. The day around an in-person one is longer. Sidney Kimmel says “The day begins at 9:00 a.m. and includes an information session, lunch and tours all hosted by our current students.” VCOM's schedule adds a financial aid session, “Lunch with current students” and a “Tour of the local area”.

Plan for walking. Utah's day includes a walking tour, and it says “applicants should plan for weather-appropriate attire and footwear as needed”. Our what to wear guide covers shoes and coats. On cost, Sidney Kimmel notes “Limited funds are available to defray the cost of travel and lodging.” Ask each school before you book.

Treat every conversation on campus as part of the day. Our interview day guide walks through a typical schedule.

How to decide when you get a choice

Start with what the school says. Iowa is the clearest: “Interview format will not be disclosed to our committee and will not factor into admissions decisions.” It adds “Applicants are encouraged to choose the interview format that works best for them.” and “Both interview formats are the same”. PCOM says “The committee does not have a preference on which you select.”

Check whether the school has a preference

Iowa says the committee is not told which format you picked. PCOM, Buffalo and WesternU COMP say they have no preference. If your school says nothing, ask the admissions office.

Read the rules on distance and required parts

Some schools decide for you. Duquesne interviews in person within a four-hour drive of Pittsburgh, Incarnate Word asks applicants within five hours to come in, and UTRGV requires its in-person group interview.

Count the cost and the days away

Travel, a night in a hotel and missed work or class add up across several interviews. Iowa says its committee knows applicants weigh cost and availability.

Go in person if you have never seen the campus

Tours, lunch with students and the walk between buildings tell you things a video call can't. If you can afford one trip, spend it on a school high on your list.

Pick virtual if travel would cut into your prep

A rested, well-practiced interview counts for more than the trip. Virtual days at Iowa cover the same interview, and you still meet faculty, staff and students.

Practice question
“Why do you want to come to our school?”A strong answer ties two or three specific things about this school, some you saw or heard that day, to your own experiences, then says what you would add.

If your interview is virtual

With most US schools online this cycle, many of your interviews may be virtual. The questions are the same, and the camera, lighting and setup become your job. Our virtual medical school interview tips cover the setup and the online day.

Sources: each school's row links the official page behind it, from our school guides' glance data, checked on the date in the row. Prose quotes from the admissions pages of Iowa, PCOM, Sidney Kimmel, VCOM and Utah. All checked October 24, 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Are medical school interviews in person or virtual in 2026?

Mostly virtual. Of the 213 US MD and DO schools in our guides with a published interview mode, 160 list virtual only. 16 interview only in person, 11 are in person with a virtual exception, and 18 offer both.

Which medical schools have in-person interviews?

In person only for 2026-27: Sidney Kimmel, Morehouse, Virginia Tech Carilion, Utah, UNR Med, Mississippi, UT Tyler, Kentucky and BYU (MD), and VCOM, ARCOM, ATSU-KCOM, OSU-COM, Xavier, The Valley COM and Baptist (DO). Many more offer in person as an option.

Does choosing a virtual interview hurt your chances?

Not at schools that say so. Iowa does not tell its committee which format you chose, and PCOM, Buffalo and WesternU COMP say they have no preference. Where a school is silent, ask admissions.

What happens on an in-person interview day?

Expect a full day on campus. Sidney Kimmel starts at 9:00 a.m. with an information session, lunch and tours hosted by students. VCOM adds a financial aid session, lunch with students and a tour of the local area. What happens on interview day.

Do medical schools pay for interview travel?

Usually you pay. Sidney Kimmel says it has limited funds to help with travel and lodging, so ask the admissions office at each school that interviews in person.
