MMI vs traditional: how to prepare differently
MMI
- A circuit of short, timed stations. The 13 MMI-only schools here that publish a count run 5 to 11 stations.
- Each station gives you a prompt, a minute or two to think and a few minutes to answer, scored by one rater.
- Practice under a timer with ethics, role play, policy and teamwork prompts, and say your reasoning out loud.
Traditional or panel
- One to three longer conversations with faculty, students or a committee panel, open file or closed file.
- Practice your own story: why medicine, why this school, your key experiences and a challenge you handled.
- In an open-file interview, be ready for questions about anything you submitted.
For the MMI, our MMI prep guide covers station types and a practice plan, and the free MMI timer runs stations at real timing. For every format, start with how to prepare for medical school interviews.
Not confirmed yet
6 schools have not confirmed a 2026-27 format on an official page, so they are not counted above.
The 6 schools
- Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty of Medicine: AFMC lists an MMI and a competency assessment, but Memorial and MSAR 2027 say the 2026-27 format is not decided yet.
- Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine: PNWU says its interview day is under development and may include an MMI.
- Rush Medical College of Rush University: Rush says the interview day is virtual but does not publish its format.
- University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine: UNR confirms in-person interviews in Reno but not the format.
- University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine: The interview structure is not published.
- UNT Health Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine: TCOM's AACOM profile and its old MMI page were offline on Oct 16, and its admissions page gives no format.
How we built this list
On October 16, 2026 we checked every format and mode claim in our 231 US and Canadian MD and DO school guides against each school's own page or AAMC MSAR 2027, AACOM Choose DO, AFMC or OMSAS. A school is listed with a format only when the claim matched an official page for 2026-27. A school counts as using an MMI when its interview day has live MMI stations. A recorded step on its own does not count. Every guide is also in our school directory.
Frequently asked questions
Which medical schools use the MMI in 2026?
66 of the 231 US and Canadian MD and DO schools we cover use an MMI for 2026-27, confirmed on an official page: 45 of 162 US MD schools, 6 of 51 DO schools and 15 of 18 Canadian schools. 22 of them pair the MMI with a one-on-one or panel interview. The full list, with each school's source, is on this page.
Which Canadian medical schools use the MMI?
15 of 18: Dalhousie, McGill, McMaster, NOSM, Queen's, TMU, Université de Montréal, Sherbrooke, Laval, University of Alberta, UBC, University of Calgary, University of Manitoba, uOttawa and University of Saskatchewan. Toronto runs a modified personal interview (four short interviews, four raters) and Western's Schulich school uses a structured panel. Laval, Montreal and Sherbrooke hold their MMIs in French.
Do DO schools use the MMI?
A few. 6 of 51 DO schools confirm an MMI for 2026-27 (BUCOM, The Valley COM, Touro Nevada, WesternU HCOM, Western University COMP and XUCOM). Most DO schools hold traditional one-on-one or panel interviews.
Are medical school interviews online or in person in 2026?
Mostly online. Of the 225 schools with a confirmed 2026-27 mode, 174 (77%) interview only online, 20 only in person and 31 offer both or split the day. In-person interviews are more common at DO schools, where 29 of 49 hold some interviews on campus.
How do I find out my school's interview format?
Read your interview invitation first, then the school's admissions page and its AAMC MSAR entry (AACOM Choose DO for DO schools). Formats change between cycles, so check the 2026-27 page, not an older one. Our school guides link each school's own page.
Is the MMI harder than a traditional interview?
Neither is harder. They test different things: an MMI scores how you reason through short scenarios, and a traditional interview scores how you talk about your own path. Many schools on this list mix both, so practice both formats.
